Vol. 11 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SEA FISHERIES EXPENDITURE.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he will specify the amount of money spent last year by the Department on sea fisheries as distinct from river fisheries, and of the amount spent on sea fisheries, how much was spent on salaries, insurance and interest on loans; if there remained a residue in what manner was it spent on developments and in what area.

The figures asked for by the Deputy have already been given by me in reply to questions put by Deputies Byrne and Everett during the discussion on the Estimates for my Department last week.

The expenditure by the Department on sea fisheries during the year 1924-25, was:—

Development Account

£20,051

Fishery Patrol Service

9,041

Total

£29,092

Of this sum nothing was paid in respect of salaries which are provided for under another head; but the wages of instructors, caretakers, and such like are included in this sum, as well as the pay of the officers and crew of the "Muirchu."

The amount spent on insurance of power fishing vessels in the year was £5,172.

The Department does not borrow money, and hence makes no payment of interest on loans.

The expenditure on other development schemes amounted to £14,324, and is made up as follows:

Loans to fishermen

£3,294

Purchase of nets, ropes, salt and barrels for sale

3,284

Repairing boats and engines

1,618

Instruction

2,298

Dredging harbours

783

Various small schemes

3,047

Total

£14,324

The Department's accounts are not kept in a manner to show the expenditure in different areas, and it is not, therefore, possible to indicate over what areas this money has been applied. I may, however, state, for the information of the Deputy, that the amount for dredging has all been expended on Arklow Harbour.
