Vol. 11 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DESTROYED PROPERTY: POSITION OF CLAIMANTS UNDER THE BUDGET.

asked the Minister for Finance whether claimants for compensation for property destroyed, commandeered, or damaged, will be permitted to add 33? per cent. to the valuation of the furniture in order to meet the additional cost of replacement.

I do not consider that the adoption of the course suggested by the Deputy would be justified, nor can I admit his assumption that furniture prices will advance by the amount of the duty.

Would the Minister admit any advance of valuation whatever?

No, not as at present advised.

Does the Minister consider it just that people whose furniture was destroyed and claimed for a certain amount should have to pay an additional sum to replace it owing to the tax?

I do not admit that. I know that in recent months the price of furniture has fallen considerably, and I do not think that the duty will put it up beyond the price prevailing when the award was made.
