Vol. 11 No. 10

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WEXFORD UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why unemployment benefit is not being paid to Michael Tully, Keepers Lane, Wexford.

Michael Tully, of Keepers Lane, Wexford, claimed unemployment benefit for himself and increased benefit in respect of his wife and child at Trim, Co. Meath, on the 1st January last, and was paid benefit as well as increased benefit on that claim up to and including 28th January. He next appeared at the Wexford Exchange on the 2nd February, where he renewed his claim for personal benefit and dependants benefit. It subsequently transpired that while the applicant was in receipt of benefit at Trim in respect of himself and his dependants, he was living away from his family and was not, in fact, contributing anything to their support. Further enquiry revealed that his wife had been in receipt of home help in Wexford on and off from the 27th September, 1924, to the 24th January, 1925, and was not supported by her husband. Further enquiry became necessary with the view to determining the position of the applicant under the Unemployment Insurance Acts, and it is hoped that it will be possible to come to a decision on the outstanding questions at an early date.

Does the Minister admit there is some unemployment benefit due to this man? I understand he is back with his wife now.

I am not admitting that. On the facts as put before me it is quite probable there is benefit due, but inquiries must be made.
