Vol. 11 No. 17

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - TELEPHONIC COMMUNICATION WITH LIGHTHOUSE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is proposed to re-establish telephone communication between Tuskar Lighthouse and the mainland.

Telephonic communication between the Tuskar Rock Lighthouse and the mainland was not provided for Post Office purposes, but the submarine cable was maintained by the Post Office on a payment basis and on behalf of the British Board of Trade. Although the repair of the cable has been repeatedly on the programme of a British cable ship, which would normally have undertaken the work, it has not been possible on account of rough seas and bad weather conditions to effect the repairs. It is understood that, as a consequence of this difficulty, the British Board of Trade and the Commissioners of Irish Lights are considering a proposal to afford communication with the Tuscar Rock through wireless installation.

Can the Minister say whether there will be communication in the near future?

I hope there will be.

So do I, but that is not an answer. Does the Minister's Department enter into the matter at all?

Only so far as the installation is concerned.

Is his Department prepared to do the work which has been done in the past in this connection, if representations are made?

Of course. We are simply awaiting instructions.

It is a matter for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, then.
