Vol. 11 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION WITH TUSKAR LIGHTHOUSE.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is no telephonic communication between Tuskar Lighthouse and the mainland, and if, in view of the precarious position of the lightkeepers at this lighthouse, he will have representations made in the proper quarter to have this situation remedied.

I am aware of the fact that the telephone cable connecting the Tuskar Rock and the mainland has not been in operation for the past couple of years. The question of having the cable repaired or an alternative method of electrical communication substituted is one for the Board of Trade, who administer the lighthouse service and who, I am aware, have at present under consideration the installation of a wireless service between the Rock and the mainland. The British Government have already been informed that communication with the lighthouse is desirable and should be retained.
