Vol. 13 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EX-VOLUNTEER'S CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that ex-Volunteer John Hubert Fagan met with an accident in July, 1923, due to the starting-handle of a motor car, through the engine backfiring, striking him in the face, which resulted in the smashing of his teeth and injuries to his eyes, and which necessitated the removal of his right eye; that Fagan was awarded 16s. 9d. per week from April 11th, 1924, to February 28th, 1925; that medical re-examination took place on February 8th, 1925, as a result of which he has not been paid pension, gratuity or any allowance, and if he will see that this man is adequately compensated for his injuries.

Mr. Fagan was awarded a temporary pension of 16/9 per week from the 11th January, 1924, to the 28th February, 1925, in respect of injury to the left eye, stated to have been received in the circumstances mentioned by the Deputy. When the case was reviewed, further enquiries were made into the matter, as a result of which it could not be established that Mr. Fagan had been injured in the manner alleged. I regret, therefore, that I am not in a position to grant a further pension to the applicant.
