Vol. 14 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - POST OFFICE VACANCIES—PROPOSED ALLOCATION TO EX-ARMY MEN.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether it is proposed to allocate a definite number of positions on the Postmen's Class to ex-National Army men; whether the number of vacancies to be so earmarked has been fixed, and whether, in considering the matter, he will take into account the claims of auxiliary postmen, with service in many cases as long as twenty-five years.

The Post Office is under definite obligations to provide qualified boy messengers with established appointments as postmen, and as their claims must first be satisfied, it is not possible to state what vacancies will be available for allocation amongst ex-soldiers or auxiliary postmen. I have already given auxiliary postmen in the Dublin district an opportunity of qualifying for a number of positions as postmen, and I am at present considering a scheme for allocating a certain proportion of available vacancies to that class.
