Vol. 14 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - HEAVY LORRY TRAFFIC.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if the matter of the prohibition of heavy lorry traffic has been under consideration by the Roads Advisory Committee, and, if so, what was the results; also, if he has received representations from County Councils in the Saorstát for permission to close certain roads in their areas against lorry traffic over a certain weight.

As regards the first part of the question I would refer the Deputy to paragraphs 92 and 93 of the Interim Report of the Roads Advisory SubCommittee on the taxation of road vehicles, dated February, 1925. Effect was given to the recommendation by the issue of an Order on the 15th of October last reducing from 12 tons to 9 tons the legal laden weight of all heavy vehicles not licensed before that date except in the cases of the four County Boroughs. The answer to the second part of the question is in the affirmative. In every case where a definite proposal is submitted the Council is asked for information necessary to consider the holding of a local inquiry. The whole matter was fully explained to the County Councils by a circular letter dated the 28th May, 1925, a copy of which I will give to the Deputy.
