Vol. 15 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - NAAS MAILS.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that letters and newspapers posted in Naas shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday evenings are not despatched from the local post office until 4 p.m. on Saturdays; that the delay in despatch causes serious inconvenience, and, in the case of newspapers, actual loss, and if he will direct that in future arrangements shall be made by which mails can be sent out in reasonable time.

Correspondence, including newspapers, may be posted at Naas up to 9.50 p.m. for inclusion in the general night mail despatch. On the 7th instant, however, a large number of newspapers which are ordinarily posted between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. were not posted until shortly before the latest hour for posting— 9.50 p.m.—and, as they could not all be dealt with in the limited time available, some had, of necessity, to remain over until the following day.

The latest hour for posting is fixed with regard only to the average traffic arising; it does not, and cannot, provide for abnormal last-moment postings.
