Vol. 15 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CURRAGH ROADS MAINTENANCE.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that the Lurrig Lane road and the adjoining Northern and Eastern Boundary Curragh Roads, at the back of the Rifle Ranges on the Curragh, have not been maintained in good condition by his Department, in accordance with the agreement entered into, under 6 and 7 Wm. 4, cap. 116, and 55 and 56 Vic., cap. 43, between the Grand Jury of the County Kildare and the British War Department during the years 1893-1896, viz., that the War Department shall, at their own expense. make to the satisfaction of the County Surveyor and keep in repair to his satisfaction, the roads marked A.X.O. and X.B. (Lurrig Lane), on the Ordnance Sheets 23 and 28 deposited with the Secretary to this Grand Jury; further, whether he will give instructions to have those roads improved immediately and maintained regularly, as, owing to their present condition, the residents and the public generally are at considerable inconvenience.

The liability for the maintenance of the roads in question is being inquired into. The documents embodying the agreement mentioned by the Deputy are not in the possession of the Department of Defence. Representations are, however, being made to the British War Department for their transfer with a view to my considering the arrangements which might be made with the Kildare County Council in regard to the road services in question. I shall communicate with the Deputy on the matter as soon as possible.

Will the Minister get into communication with the Secretary of the county council, who will give him the information he is looking for? The information required is contained in the query books of the Spring and Summer Assizes for the years 1893-1896.

If there was an agreement entered into between the council and the then War Department, it would be better to have the original documents and we will endeavour to get them.
