Vol. 16 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ACCIDENT TO KERRY SOLDIER.

asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the claim of the widow and child of the late Volunteer Martin Gaynor, a native of Kerry; if he is aware that whilst cycling from the Military Barracks, Kilkenny, on Friday, March 12th, 1926, with a cycling battalion to take part in a St. Patrick's Day display, the leader of the cycling party fell from his machine and Gaynor, who was cycling immediately behind, rode over him and fell, his head striking the ground, resulting in his death at the Military Barracks, Kilkenny, on March 25th; that the widow and child are without means of support and received no compensation or pension, and if he will give the case immediate consideration with a view to granting compensation.

My attention has been drawn to the claim of Mrs. Gaynor, and to the circumstances out of which it arises. The accident occurred after the end of the period of military service to which the Army Pensions Act, 1923, applies. In consequence, I regret that I am unable to entertain the claim. It will probably be one for consideration under the legislation which I propose to introduce with a view to amending the Act mentioned. Mrs. Gaynor was informed accordingly.
