Vol. 16 No. 12

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. - CLAIM FOR MILITARY SERVICE PENSION.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state why ex-Captain Patrick Naughton (No. 14487), has been refused a certificate of military service; if he is aware that Mr. Naughton was in the Volunteers and took part in the 1916 Rising, in North King Street, Dublin, and was transferred in 1918 to D. Coy., 2nd Battalion, Athlone Brigade, and that he also took part in Cornafulla ambush; that he joined the National Army on March 3rd, 1922, was wounded outside Athlone on July 24th, 1922, and was discharged unfit for service on November 27th, 1923; and whether in view of this he will have this case reinvestigated with a view to granting him a pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924.

A certificate of military service has not been awarded to ex-Captain Patrick Naughton as he has not established to the satisfaction of the Board of Assessors that he rendered the minimum amount of military service required by sub-section (4) of Section 2 of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. I am not aware of his services in the Volunteers prior to his joining the National Army on the 2nd March, 1922, but I am aware that he was demobilised from the latter force "medically unfit" on the 27th November, 1923. He has now submitted particulars of service purporting to be additional evidence in support of his claim to a certificate. On this evidence I have requested the Board of Assessors to re-open their findings in the case.
