Vol. 16 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SCARIFF WORKHOUSE GROUNDS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if his Department proposes to dispose of the building within the Scariff Workhouse grounds, formerly used as a fever hospital; if that building is now intended to be converted into a dwellinghouse, and, if so, for whom; if the plot of land surrounding the building which is let to a labourer in the town of Scariff, is to be resumed by his Department before the building is disposed of, and whether he will see that another plot will be provided for the present holder of the plot.

It is proposed to let portion of Scariff Workhouse grounds, including the site of the fever hospital, to Mr. Daniel Treacy for building purposes, and the necessary procedure under the State Lands Act, 1924, has been complied with. I have no information as to whether land is let to a labourer. I understand, however, that the Clare County Council let portion of the grounds for plots. Although I inquired from the County Council recently in the matter, I have not yet been informed exactly what part of the grounds is so let. Any lettings that may have been arranged by the County Council have no legal force, as they were not made in pursuance of the State Lands Act, 1924. I am not, therefore, under any obligation to provide another plot for the holder mentioned by the Deputy.
