Vol. 16 No. 17

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - REINSTATEMENT TO CO. CAVAN ESTATES.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture whether the Land Commission have received a claim from Mr. Thomas J. Fay, of Newgrove, Raheny, Co. Dublin, for reinstatement as the representative of his father, whose mother and himself were evicted in the year 1897 from a holding at Rantavan, Mullagh, Co. Cavan, on the estate of Captain Philpott, and whether as this case is pending for a number of years, the Minister will take steps to have Mr. Fay's claim expedited either by providing him with an equivalent holding or reinstating him to the old family home.

An application for reinstatement in a holding has been received by the Land Commission from Thomas Joseph Fay, who claims as the sole representative of his grandmother, who was evicted from a farm of about 13 acres on the Philpotts Estate, County Cavan. This farm was purchased under the Irish Land Act, 1903, by another tenant. The applicant now seeks a holding in the County Dublin or County Meath, but the Land Commission have been unable to so provide him.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if the Land Commission received a statement from Mr. Laurence Hughes, Drumlish, Co. Longford, who was evicted from a farm near Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, setting out the facts of his case, and if same was signed by a number of Deputies of Dáil Eireann, requesting favourable consideration of Mr. Hughes's claim; and further, if this statement was lodged in the Commissioners' Office in 1924, and if he will state why nothing has since been heard from the Commissioners regarding his application, and whether the Minister will cause an inquiry to be made into the whole facts of this case with a view to having Mr. Hughes either reinstated in his original holding or provided with an alternative one.

Mr. HOGAN

The statement referred to in the question was received, and returned to Mr. Hughes at his request, accompanied by a letter informing him that the Land Commission did not see their way to take any action in the matter of his reinstatement. The Commissioners are not prepared to alter their decision in the matter.
