Vol. 16 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SLIGO SHIRT FACTORY.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the closing of the Sligo Shirt Factory has resulted in the disemployment of about a hundred workers, and whether, in view of the more favourable situation due to the import duty on wearing apparel, he can use his influence with the owner to secure the re-opening of the factory.

I am aware that the Sligo Shirt Factory has been closed since the end of last year. I understand that the number of workers disemployed as a result is about 50. My Department has been in touch with the owner, who has been most helpful in giving information, but he has stated definitely that he is not prepared to re-open the factory on his own responsibility. I am informed that the plant and machinery are for sale and should any group desire to purchase with a view to restarting the industry my Department will give any assistance it can in the matter.
