Vol. 18 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMMANDEERED HORSES (NAAS).

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that four horses, the property of Mr. A. Young, Barrack Lodge, Naas, were commandeered by an officer of the National Army, who was accompanied by a sergeant and four volunteers, in July, 1922; that only one horse, worth about £150, was returned to Mr. Young after about forty days, in such condition that he had to sell it for £11; that he sent in a claim for £120, and that although an officer was sent down to make inquiries, he has heard nothing since; further, that Mr. Young reported the matter in 1922 to the O.C., Kildare Area, and whether, in view of all these circumstances, the Minister will favourably consider the question of compensation to Mr. Young.

The information available goes to show that four horses were commandeered from Mr. Young in July, 1922, but the actual ownership of these animals has not been established. The case has presented unusual difficulties, but every endeavour is now being made to have the matter disposed of. I will communicate the result to the Deputy as soon as possible.
