Vol. 18 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DISTRESS AMONGST GALWAY ISLANDERS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he has received representations from the Finance Committee of the Galway County Council with reference to the great distress that prevails in the island of Inishboffin, and whether it is the intention of his Department to take any steps to relieve this distress.

Such representations have been received and correspondence has already taken place. As the Deputy is aware, I have no funds available from which grants might be made to relieve exceptional distress. This is a matter primarily for the local assistance authority, and on the 6th December the Galway Homes and Home Assistance Committee ordered that the assistance officer be directed to give home assistance in all deserving cases.
