Vol. 18 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EXTENSION OF CORPORATION'S POWERS.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has received a communication from the solicitors for Limerick Corporation gas undertaking with reference to their proposal that the undertaking should be authorised to pay a superannuation allowance to old employees who may be displaced owing to the erection of new machinery, and whether he will take the necessary steps to empower the Corporation to pay such pensions to employees who have been in whole-time employment with the gas undertaking for over twenty years, and may now be made redundant owing to the introduction of modern plant and machinery.

A communication in reference to this matter has been received from the solicitor to the Limerick Corporation, and is at present being considered by the Minister for Local Government and Public Health and myself. The Limerick Corporation was advised some time ago that the powers sought could not be conferred by Order under the existing Gas Acts, and that it would seem necessary for the Corporation to promote a private Bill to secure the powers. The Corporation has now put forward an alternative proposal which is under examination.
