Vol. 18 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KILDARE EX-SERVICEMEN'S HOUSES.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if, consequent on the erection of seventeen houses for ex-servicemen on the Cloncurry Estate, partly in County Dublin and partly in Kildare, the construction of a roadway to the houses was undertaken by the Land Commission; if this roadway has been left in an unfinished state to the great inconvenience of the residents; if the Circuit Judge before whom the occupiers of the houses were cited for non-payment of rates, stated that if the roadway was not put into repair, he would not again grant decrees for rates against these people; and if the Minister will direct that the work of providing a proper roadway be undertaken at once.

Mr. HOGAN

The accommodation road referred to, which connects two public roads, was made and fenced about two years ago. The road is at present in good condition, and the statements to the contrary are not correct.

May I ask if the Minister himself inspected the road or whence his information is derived? It is contrary to the information I have.

Mr. HOGAN

I suppose, officially, I have inspected the road.

Is the Minister aware that positive statements were made at Kildare Co. Council that the road was in a very bad state?

Mr. HOGAN

Good roads and bad roads are comparative. This is not supposed to be a public road. It is the ordinary type of bye-road which the Land Commission constructs. Once the road has been constructed, it is the duty of the persons interested—the persons who are using the road—to keep it in good order.

Their contention is that it never was properly constructed.

Mr. HOGAN

That is not my information.

Will the Minister make further inquiries?

Mr. HOGAN

I will.
