Vol. 19 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CARRIAGE RATE ON SALMON.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that the sum of 1s. 3d. per cwt. is being charged on every box of salmon sent from Youghal to England, in addition to the ordinary carriage, payable to the Great Southern Railway; whether this is an entirely new charge and is payable on the gross weight, which includes the box and ice, and if he will explain the reason for this new departure, which is seriously affecting this industry.

I understand that the carrying companies have an arrangement for facilitating consignors in clearing through the Customs goods exported from An Saorstát. These charges are in the nature of a recoupment to the companies concerned for the expenses and labour involved in complying with the Customs regulations affecting the export of goods to Great Britain from An Saorstát. These charges very per consignment, irrespective of number of packages, and range from 4d. to 3s. 4d. The charge levied in the case to which the Deputy refers is in respect of consignments the weight of which lies between 2 cwt. and 3 cwt.
