Vol. 20 No. 6

ORDUITHE AN LAE. ORDERS OF THE DAY. - VOTE 17—RATES ON GOVERNMENT PROPERTY.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £55,450 chun slánuithe na suime is gá chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1928, chun Rátaí agus Síntiúisí in ionad Rátaí, etc., i dtaobh Maoine Rialtais.

That a sum not exceeding £55,450 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1928, for Rates and Contributions in lieu of Rates, etc., in respect of Government Property.

This represents the amount that would be paid in rates on the various items of State property if they were owned by private individuals. The amount will vary from year to year as the rates in different counties and county boroughs vary. There have been certain decreases due to the fact that at one time rates were, in fact, paid by the Government on certain buildings on which no rates would have been payable if they had been owned by private individuals—for instance, on the National Museum, the National Library and the National Gallery. These are educational institutions on which rates would not have been payable, and in future no grant in lieu of rates will be made. Certain steps are also being taken in connection with model schools where there is perhaps a school and a residence, and where there was formerly a grant made in respect of the whole building. In the future it will only be made in respect of the part of the building on which rates would be payable if owned by a private individual.

Vote put and agreed to.
