Vol. 20 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TERMINATION OF MAIL CAR DRIVER'S EMPLOYMENT.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that Edward Delahunt, who has driven the mail car between Straffan and Johnstown, Co. Kildare, for many years, has received notice that his job will terminate early in August, and if such is the case, whether the Minister will inquire if another position can be found for this man or adequate compensation given.

Mr. Edward Delahunt is contractor for the conveyance of mails by mail cart between Straffan Station and Johnstown under a contract terminable at any time on three months' notice by either side.

Arrangements have been made for an improved and more economical postal service in this area by the introduction of a motor mail service involving the termination of Mr. Delahunt's contract.

Mail car contractors are not servants of my Department and there is no Post Office employment available for Mr. Dclahunt. He is not, of course, entitled to any award because of the termination of his contract.

Mr. WOLFE

Will the Minister take action as he did in a similar case when the mail car running between Kilcock and Coolcarrigan was done away with and will he recommend this man on account of the long service of himself and his father for an allotment of land if there is any available in the district, as was done, in the other case?

I am afraid I could not undertake that.
