Vol. 21 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ILLEGAL FISHING.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he is aware that foreign trawlers are frequenting the waters within the three-mile limit around the southern coast for the purpose of fishing, and if he will take immediate steps to prevent this illegal fishing, which is against the interests of the local fishermen.

I am aware that steam trawlers have been from time to time fishing within certain areas off the south coast of An Saorstát where such fishing is prohibited by law; but they have very rarely been found fishing within the three mile limit. I am taking every step, up to the limit of the resources at my disposal, in endeavouring to prevent this illegal fishing.
