Vol. 22 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DISCIPLINARY ACTION IN PRISON SERVICE.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is the practice when disciplinary action involving punishment is taken against members of the Prison Staff, to charge them in writing and to give them an opportunity of defending themselves.

In an ordinary case of breach of prison discipline the accused person is furnished with a statement in writing of the charge and the evidence upon which it is based. In exceptional cases, however, where the prison authorities are satisfied that a person is not giving loyal and faithful service his appointment may be terminated without disclosing to him the grounds on which such decision was reached. All such cases are submitted to me before action is taken.
