Vol. 22 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TOWN TENANTS' COMMISSION—INTERIM REPORT.

Mr. A. BYRNE

asked the President whether the Executive Council have considered the interim report, submitted several months ago by the Town Tenants' Commission in favour of applying the Small Dwellings Acquisition Acts to houses not exceeding £1,200 in value; whether the President is aware that dwellings, the capital cost of which amounts to many millions sterling, have been erected under these Acts (as extended on the lines proposed by the Commission) in Great Britain, without involving any ultimate charge on public funds; whether he is aware that similar methods of housing finance have been financed, with like advantage by the Government of Northern Ireland, and whether part of the proceeds of the recently floated National Loan cannot now be devoted to enabling citizens of Saorstát Eireann to provide themselves with homes on the lines recommended by the Commission.

The recommendations contained in the interim report of the Town Tenants' Commission are closely related to future housing policy and are being dealt with by the Minister for Local Government and Public Health in connection with a Housing Bill which is at present in course of preparation.

I am aware of the fact that advances have been and are being made else where for the provision of houses under Acts relating to the acquisition of small dwellings.
