CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - GALWAY DRAINAGE SCHEMES.

Mr. SEAN BRODRICK

asked, the Minister for Finance (1) the number of drainage schemes in County Galway which have been approved by the Board of Works under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, and the number sent to the Galway County Council; (2) the location of such drainage schemes; (3) the estimated cost of each scheme; (4) the area benefited by each scheme; (5) the Government grant towards each scheme; (6) the average charge per acre which will be payable by the occupiers of benefited lands, if schemes are proceeded with; (7) the contribution which will be required from Galway County Council in each case; (8) should the County Council decide to borrow the amount of those contributions, the longest period which would be granted for repayment of the loans, and the annual charge in each case for such period.

PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to MINISTER for FINANCE (Mr. Bourke)

The Commissioners of Public Works have not definitely approved of any drainage scheme in County Galway under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, but have submitted four cases to the County Council for free grants with a view to their execution. The particulars required by the Deputy in connection with these schemes are given in a list which I will send to him.

The period for the repayment of all advances in connection with the Act of 1925 has been fixed at 35 years with interest at the rate of 5½ per cent. per annum.
