Vol. 29 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chairs for Coláiste na Furbacha.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the chairs supplied to Coláiste na Furbacha are of foreign manufacture.

Bentwood chairs of foreign make have been supplied with other chairs of Saorstát manufacture to Coláiste na Furbacha.

The Commissioners of Public Works, who are responsible for the provision of furniture and fittings for these colleges, have made efforts from time to time to induce furniture manufacturers in the Saorstát to produce a chair of, or approaching, the bentwood type that could compete in durability, appearance, and price with bentwood chairs of foreign manufacture, but so far the efforts of these manufacturers have not been successful. In the case of one firm which made a very earnest effort, the Commissioners have been informed that the effort has been abandoned, for the reason that the chairs cannot be produced at anything like a competitive price that would be a paying venture.
