Vol. 30 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lewis (Galway) Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the reason why the Land Commission has recognised John A. Lewis, Esq., owner of an estate, S. 1990 Galway, as a judicial tenant to himself for two holdings on his estate, notwithstanding the fact that the Land Commission did not so recognise him in the provisional list of holdings issued by the Land Commission under date February 2nd, 1926; and in view of the fact that John A. Lewis, Esq., did not lodge an objection against that provisional list from which those holdings were excluded.

As I have already informed the Deputy on 21st November last, in the schedules of particulars lodged by the owner on the 21st November, 1924, the lands referred to were returned as untenanted land and accordingly were not included in the provisional list of tenanted lands published on the 2nd February, 1926. It subsequently transpired that the lands were tenanted lands subject to judicial rents, the tenancy interests in which had been acquired by the father of the present owner, and had not merged in the fee, and they were accordingly included in a further provisional list of tenanted lands published on the 8th November, 1927.

Am I to conclude from the Minister's reply that this gentleman was a tenant to himself and was so accepted by the Land Commission?

The tenancy which the father had acquired survived there, and it had not merged in the fee.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether the Land Commission has yet resumed holdings Nos. 19, 27 and 28 on the estate of John A. Lewis, Esq. (Galway S. 1990), in which a tenancy was claimed by the owner's uncle, Henry H. Lewis, Esq., and, if so, to state what compensation, if any, has been awarded to Henry H. Lewis, Esq., for his interest therein.

Orders were made on the 7th May last by the Court authorising the Land Commission to resume the three holdings referred to. The resumption prices fixed amount to £2,523, payable in 4½ per cent. Land Bonds equal in nominal amount thereto.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state the various items that made up the total purchase price of £8,650 paid by the Land Commission for untenanted land on the estate of John A. Lewis, Esq., Co. Galway, Record No. S. 1990.

As I have already informed the Deputy, the price of £8,650 paid by the Land Commission for the untenanted land on the estate of J.A. Lewis was paid for the lands as a whole.

Can the Minister give any particulars of that?

No. I am informed the price was arrived at, taking the estate as a whole.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state whether the Land Commission has acquired the estate of Henry H. Lewis, Esq., Co. Galway (Record No. S. 6470), and, if so, to state the purchase price of that estate.

The Land Commission have acquired the untenanted lands of Gortnakilla, containing 142a. 1r. 29p., in this matter, at the price of £3,100, payable in 4½ per cent. Land Bonds equal in nominal amount thereto. They became vested in the Land Commission on the 5th April, 1929, being the appointed day fixed in respect thereof.
