Vol. 30 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flax-Growing in Donegal.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the flax-growing industry in Co. Donegal has deteriorated to a great extent during recent years; and whether, in view of this fact he is prepared to give favourable consideration to the question of granting a subsidy to aid in reviving what was once a very remunerative industry in that county.

The reply to the first portion of the question is in the affirmative, but the position in Co. Donegal in this matter does not appear to be relatively more unsatisfactory than in other counties, and I am glad to observe that the figures of flax acreage in the county for 1928 show a considerable increase over those for 1927 and are also larger than those for 1926.

With reference to the concluding portion of the question, I do not consider, for the reasons indicated in my reply of 14th November last to a similar question by Deputy Carney, that the circumstances would justify the payment of a State subsidy in respect of flax-growing in Co. Donegal.

There are great possibilities with regard to the development of this industry in Co. Donegal, and in view of the fact that large subsidies have been given in the South towards the Shannon Scheme, towards sugar beet and creameries, perhaps the Minister would consider helping that industry in the North?

Mr. Hogan

Subsidies for the Shannon Scheme and for creameries and sugar beet are for the benefit of the whole country.

There has been no subsidy given in respect of the Shannon Scheme at any time.
