Vol. 32 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repayment of Income Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the very great delay in connection with claims for the repayment of income tax in Saorstát Eireann; if he is aware that claims which have been lodged for nearly a year have not yet been paid, although vouched and certified by the Inspector of Taxes for several months; if as a result serious inconvenience has been caused to taxpayers, and the winding-up of estates of deceased persons has in many cases been held up and serious hardships incurred by legatees, next-of-kin and creditors; and if any steps will be taken to expedite the putting through and settlement of these claims.

I am informed that there is at the present time no general delay in dealing with claims for repayment of income tax in cases that are satisfactorily vouched and substantiated. Of the large number of claims dealt with annually it is inevitable that some should present difficulties that give rise to delay. If the Deputy will let me know of any particular case that he may have in mind, I shall be glad to have inquiry made into it.
