Vol. 36 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows and Orphans Pensions.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is the intention of the Government to introduce proposals for legislation to provide pensions for widows and orphans.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is now in a position to announce the result of the examination ordered by the Dáil into the question of widows' and orphans' pensions, and what steps he proposes to take regarding the matter.

I propose to answer questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. The investigation of this question has not yet been completed, and it has, therefore, not been possible for the Executive Council to arrive at a decision.

Is the Minister aware that over two years ago this House passed a motion asking the Executive Council to inquire into the cost of a Pensions Scheme? Will the Minister say what is the cause of the delay? Surely the Minister will not say that after two years the examination has not been completed?

The question is a very big one and the investigation has not yet been completed.

Mr. Murphy

Could the Minister say when the examination of this question will be completed?

I could not say.

Will the Minister inform the House what is the cause of the delay?

The size of the question and its intricacy.
