Vol. 36 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flooding of River Robe.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that hundreds of acres of hay, oats and potatoes in the parishes of Ballinrobe, Kilcommon, Crossboyne, Ballindine, Claremorris and Bekan have been destroyed by the flooding of the River Robe, and if he will state if it is the intention of the Government to compensate the farmers in those parishes for the losses sustained by them through the failure of the Commissioners of Public Works to carry out the drainage of that river.

Mr. Bourke

The Government cannot accept responsibility for damage to crops, etc., caused by the flooding of the River Robe. The answer to the other question put down by the Deputy in connection with this river gives particulars of the steps taken by the Commissioners of Public Works in regard to the possibility of formulating a feasible drainage scheme for the river.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that the National Road between Claremorris and Ballyhaunis has become impassable through flooding caused by the River Robe, and if he will state if his Department have made any representations to the Commissioners of Public Works to have the flooding abated.

I have not had any representations on this matter, but I am making inquiries. If flooding exists it is not clear that the Commissioners of Public Works have any responsibility.
