Vol. 36 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Detention of Irish Cattle in Great Britain.

Mr. T. Sheehy

(Tipperary) asked the Minister for Agriculture if the losses sustained by the detention of Irish cattle landed in Great Britain have been brought under his notice, and if he will make representations for the complete abolition of the six days' detention.

Mr. Hogan

Statements as to losses entailed by the operation of the six days' detention period have been put before me on several occasions by the live stock associations of Saorstát Eireann, and I am aware of the effects which this restriction has on the sale of Irish cattle in Great Britain. I have to point out that the restriction is imposed by an Act of the British Parliament, and not merely by a regulation made by the British Ministry of Agriculture which could be altered without special Parliamentary sanction. From representations which I have made I am satisfied that there is no likelihood that the British Government will promote legislation to abolish the period of detention.
