Vol. 37 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Limestone Quarries, Castleisland.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state why the limestone quarries, situated in the lands of Patrick Sheehan, Cordal West, Castleisland, and which were handed over to the Irish Land Commission for the use of the tenants, are closed; and if he will now state whether an immediate effort will be made to reopen same.

The Deputy would appear to have been misinformed. No limestone quarries on the lands referred to were handed over to the Land Commission. In the agreement between owner and tenant for the purchase of the holding of Patrick D. Sheehan under the Land Purchase Acts, it was provided that the rights of mining and taking minerals should be reserved and vested in the Trustees of Lord Powis, deceased, the head landlord, and the holding was vested in accordance with this agreement.

The Land Commission have no information regarding any quarry situated on Mr. Sheehan's lands and have no power to take any action in regard thereto.
