Vol. 40 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boyne and Blackwater Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is yet in a position to say when a beginning is to be made with the drainage of the Boyne and Blackwater.

The necessary investigations into these two schemes are long and difficult and it would be premature to forecast as to when actual drainage works can be begun on either of these two schemes even assuming that the necessary contributions in aid are forthcoming and that the occupiers vote in favour of the schemes.

The Commissioners of Public Works have had all the necessary inspections made on the Blackwater River and their engineer is at present preparing his report. The Commissioners hope to be able to submit a statement in connection with this proposal to the county councils concerned before the end of January next.

It has been found difficult to evolve a satisfactory scheme for the River Boyne proposal and it is now likely that further inspections will be necessary before the Commissioners can arrive at a definite decision in the matter.

I can assure the Deputy that no avoidable delay will be allowed to occur in dealing with these schemes.
