Vol. 41 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion on Mayo Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether it is intended to take steps to deal with the congestion existing on the Darcy estate (which is held on the rundale system) at Swinford and Ballyvary, Co. Mayo.

The Land Commission intend to take the necessary steps for completing the resale of the Darcy estate as soon as they are in a position to deal with the rearrangement of the holdings on this estate. Meanwhile the tenants have been placed upon a purchase annuity basis under Section 23 of the Land Act, 1931.

Might I point out that this estate was purchased by the Congested Districts Board twenty-one years ago? It is held in rundale and the tenants cannot use their holdings until the land is striped and divided amongst them. I cannot see why this matter should be postponed any longer, especially in view of the guarantees given by the Minister for Lands and Fisheries that he would take immediate action. If he promises that this estate will be dealt with within a few months, I shall be quite satisfied.
