Vol. 41 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the widespread demand for the erection of labourers' cottages and if he can indicate what proposals he is prepared to submit to the Dáil to meet this need.

I am aware of the fact that some boards of health were desirous of proceeding with schemes for the erection of labourers' cottages, but they were deterred from doing so by reason of the heavy financial burden which would be involved. The question of improved facilities for the provision of cottages is receiving consideration in conjunction with housing proposals generally.

Is the Minister not aware that it would be absolutely impossible for the boards of health to build labourers' cottages under the present Act and let them at an economic rent or anything near it?

It would be difficult, if you like, but not impossible.
