Vol. 41 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Suck Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what is the present position with regard to the drainage of the River Suck and whether it is intended (a) to carry on the work; (b) to meet the liabilities already incurred by the River Suck Drainage and Maintenance Board.

Under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, restoration works were carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works in the Suck drainage district between 1926 and 1929 at a cost of £18,806 towards which a free grant of 30 per cent. was made by the Government. It is not proposed to carry out any further works.

A Charging Order is at present being prepared to apportion the cost of the works less the free grant among the proprietors of land in the district. The period for repayment is 20 years. It is expected that the Charging Order will be issued by the middle of July.

Before the Charging Order is issued the drainage district will, in accordance with Section 3 (1) of the Act, be transferred to the County Councils of Galway and Roscommon, who will take over the business of the Drainage Board and will be responsible for the future maintenance of the district.
