Vol. 42 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Implements Crossing Border.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether any arrangements have been made or are in contemplation to enable farmers whose lands are situated partly in the Saorstát and partly in Northern Ireland to bring their agricultural machinery and implements across the Border as required, without being obliged to comply with Customs formalities which would involve considerable loss of time and other inconvenience.

Instructions have been issued to Customs Officers which will ensure that the farmers in question will not be inconvenienced in the circumstances stated, and that a charge of duty will not be raised except in respect of new machinery liable to duty imported for the first time.

Does that mean that they will not have to go around to the Customs station or will that enable them without formalities to go across by the shortest route?

I would not say without formalities. They will have to go by the Customs Officer in order that they may be identified, but there will be nothing imposed on them which would involve considerable loss of time or inconvenience.
