Vol. 42 No. 7

In Committee on Finance. - Vote 71—Aonach Tailteann.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim ná raghaidh thar £1,000 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31adh lá de Mhárta, 1933, chun roimh-íoc d'íoc le Comhairle Aonach Tailteann.

That a sum not exceeding £1,000 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1933, for an advance to the Council of Aonach Tailteann.

The vote of £1,000 is required to give effect to the decision of the Executive Council to make an advance to the Council of Aonach Tailteann in respect of the Games to be held from 29th June to 10th July next. This is merely a continuance of the policy which has always been adopted with regard to these Games. They have received very generous support in the past when any such generous support was required. On the last occasion in 1928 the State advanced £2,000, which sum was repaid following a financial success. It seems to me that in view of the history of the Games in 1928 the amount which is now being provided will be used more in the nature of a guarantee than in the nature of an actual loan—a guarantee against loss. The conditions of repayment will be imposed by the Minister. From the assurances which I have received from the members of the Council of Aonach Tailteann and in view of the special circumstances of this year, I have no doubt whatever that the £1,000 will be repaid.

Question put and agreed to.
