Vol. 421 No. 9

Written Answers. - Foreign Languages Studies.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

73 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if he will provide copies of studies and/or reports carried out by his Department on the study of foreign languages, with particular reference to French and German; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have prepared a number of reports in recent years in regard to the teaching and examination of French in second-level schools. The principles and practices outlined in these reports apply with equal validity to the other modern continental languages.

I am arranging to have the material forwarded to the Deputy.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

74 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the number and percentage of the total student population who study (1) French and (2) German in each of the third level institutions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information the Deputy sought is set out on the following tables.

An asterisk opposite three of the colleges indicates that relevant data is not readily available. When it becomes available it will be forwarded directly to the Deputy.
