Vol. 42 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Financial Position of Farmers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the financial position of farmers throughout the country is very bad and rapidly getting worse, and whether he has under consideration any emergency measures for saving the industry.

I am aware that agriculture in Saorstát Eireann, in common with that in other countries, and with other industries, is suffering from depression. Measures such as the Bill at present before the Seanad, which is designed to stabilise the price of dairy produce, aid in relief of rates on agricultural land, and the extension of facilities for granting loans by local authorities to rated occupiers for the purchase of seeds and manures, have been already taken. Further measures for the encouragement and extension of tillage and agricultural production generally are under consideration, and will be introduced as soon as possible.

Arising out of that answer, is any effort being made by our diplomatic or consular representatives in foreign countries to open up new markets for Irish agricultural produce?

Yes, that is being done.
