Vol. 42 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carriage of Lobsters.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that, owing to the refusal of the Great Southern Railways Company to carry consignments of lobsters by mail trains, the fish, in many instances, have been found to be dead on arrival at the markets; if the Minister will make representations to the Railway Company with a view to having facilities provided for the transit of consignments of lobsters by first train each day.

I am not aware that the Great Southern Railways Company have refused facilities for the carriage of lobsters by mail trains, but the Company's willingness to do so is rendered abortive by the fact that the carriage of limited quantities of perishable merchandise would subject the mail steamers concerned to an increase in harbour dues out of all proportion to the possible freight and other difficulties would arise also. I am having the possibility of finding a way out of these difficulties fully explored.
