Vol. 42 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Factories in Kildare.

(Clare)(for Mr. Norton) asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the exceptionally large number of unemployed persons in the County of Kildare and whether he will use the offices of his Department to help to establish factories in the county so as to assist in relieving the acute distress which at present exists there.

I am aware of the position as regards unemployment in Co. Kildare. I have had detailed reports prepared relating to the position in certain districts in that county and special consideration is being given to the possibility of promoting the development of suitable industries. I can assure the Deputy that no opportunity will be lost of bringing to the notice of persons proposing to engage in manufacturing enterprises in the Saorstát the buildings and other facilities available in many of the towns of the county.

Has the Minister any reason to believe that unemployment is worse in County Kildare than in any of the other counties of the Saorstát?

Unemployment is somewhat worse in Kildare than in most other counties, due to certain abnormal circumstances there.
