Vol. 42 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roundstone Bay—Position of Fishermen.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he will state what is the present position with regard to the 26 fishing boats and gear supplied by the Congested Districts Board to the fishermen of Roundstone Bay; whether he is aware that the sequestration of these boats and gear has resulted in an annual loss to the district of about £60,000, and if he will state what steps, if any, his Department proposes to take to compensate the fishermen for the loss of their sole means of livelihood.

I have no knowledge of the boats referred to, but perhaps the Deputy could furnish me with their names and the names of their former owners.

Will the Minister say —assuming, as I think I am correct in assuming, that these are non-power boats—when and where 26 such boats earned £60,000 per annum?

That is a separate question.

Mr. Lynch

Will the Minister say whether these are the same Roundstone fishermen who, at the request of their Parish Priest, inveigled the Department into placing a power-boat at their disposal on hire and who then refused to go on board until the Parish Priest would pay them 5/- a day?

That is certainly a separate question.
