Vol. 43 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Cured Herrings to Russia.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries if he has received any information as to the demand for cured herrings from Russia, and whether he is taking any steps to secure part of this market for the Irish product.

I have no information on the subject beyond what is available to the public. The demand for cured herrings in Russia is feeble, and only after much negotiation between the Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society and the Soviet representatives an order has been recently secured for a comparatively small proportion of this year's British catch at a low price.

I have not been approached in the matter by Saorstát herring curers.
