Vol. 44 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Womanagh (Castlemartyr) Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is prepared to put additional excavators or dredgers at work on the River Womanagh part of the Castlemartyr Drainage Scheme as progress on that scheme is hampered and employment restricted by having only one dredger at work and, if so, is he prepared to permit one of the excavators to be used on an adjoining minor drainage scheme to obviate the flooding which periodically inundates the town of Midleton, Co. Cork, and for which a grant has been made.

At present an excavator is working in the Womanagh Drainage District, and a second will be available for that scheme in about a month's time.

With a view to relieving flooding at Midleton, the County Surveyor for Cork has been informed of the terms on which the Commissioners will be prepared to hire the second excavator for work at Midleton. If the terms are accepted, the machine will be despatched to Midleton and used there before it is sent to the Womanagh drainage.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the unemployment grant will be held up and that meanwhile the unemployed men will be without work? Could the Parliamentary Secretary possibly manage to send the dredger at once?

You cannot get more out of a pint pot than you put into it. We cannot do more than use the dredger. We cannot use it twice. There are two dredgers, and they are both being used.
