Vol. 45 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Capital and Labour Required for Cement Factory.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what proportion of the labour required in a factory producing 250,000 tons of cement per annum from materials raised in this country would be employed in raising the raw materials and in the manufacturing processes resulting in the production of cement clinker, as compared with the proportion employed in the processes subsequent to the production of such clinker; and, further, to estimate what, if any, variation of this proportion would result from producing the 250,000 tons of cement per annum in three factories of equal size instead of one single unit.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state approximately the amount of capital required to erect one mill capable of producing from imported clinker 250,000 tons of cement per annum, and the increased capital required to erect three mills of approximately equal capacity to produce between them 250,000 tons of cement per annum from imported clinker; and also to state what is the useful life of the machinery employed in such mills.

I propose to take Nos. 8 and 9 together. I am not in a position to furnish the particulars asked for in these questions.

Again, the Minister will remember that the calculations indicated on the Second Reading of the Cement Bill were based upon the pretence that he had answers in his Department to these questions.
