Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Juveniles.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the total number of children who were reported in accordance with Section 15 (4) of the School Attendance Act, 1926, to the Secretaries of Juvenile Advisory Committees and to local officers of his Department by the Principals of National Schools as having reached the age of fourteen years during each of the quarters of 1932; (b) the total number of such children for whom employment was found; and (c) the total number of juveniles between the ages of 16 and 18 years who are now registered at the Employment Exchanges as being unemployed.

The position is that statistics of children reported in accordance with Section 15 (4) of the School Attendance Act, 1926, are compiled only in respect of the four employment exchanges at which Juvenile Advisory Committees have been established, namely those at Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford. In regard to the second part of the question, separate figures are not compiled to show the number of such children for whom employment was found, but during the year 1932 a total of 301 children under 18 years of age were placed in their first employment after leaving school by the Employment Exchanges at Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford.

In regard to the last part of the question, separate figures for juveniles between the ages of 16 and 18 years are not kept. The total number of juveniles (i.e., children under 18 years of age) registered as unemployed at local offices of my Department on the 28th February, 1933, was 2,897; these figures include juveniles under the age of 16.
