Vol. 48 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civic Guard Transfers.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of transfers of officers and men in the Gárda Síochána from the 22nd February, 1933, up to the latest date for which the information is available, together with the cost of such transfers and to ask whether further transfers are in contemplation.

The total number of transfers of officers and men in the Gárda Síochána made during the period from 22nd February last to 25th May last, inclusive, was 340, viz., 39 officers and 301 lower ranks. Of the total number, 227 (i.e. 39 officers and 188 other ranks) were transfers at the public expense. The remaining transfers, i.e. 113 lower ranks, were not made at the public expense. Of the 39 officers, 12 were transferred within the Dublin Metropolitan Area, without any expense.

I am unable at the moment to state the total cost of the transfers made at the public expense, but the Deputy may take it that there was nothing abnormal about either the expenses incurred or the number of persons transferred.

As regards the last part of the question, transfers will continue to take place as the Commissioner may think necessary, but he informs me that he does not contemplate any exceptional activity in this direction.

Could the Minister give us, even approximately, what the cost of those transfers would be?

I cannot, at the moment.

When would the Minister be in a position to give us this information?

Would the Deputy repeat the question in a week's time?
